The 2024 China Internet Civilization Conference Opens in Chengdu |

On the morning of August 28, the 2024 China Internet Civilization Conference opened in Chengdu, themed on promoting the spirit of the times and jointly advancing civility in cyberspace. Li Shulei, a member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, attended and delivered a keynote speech. Wang Xiaohui, Secretary of the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee and Chairman of the Standing Committee of Sichuan Provincial People's Congress, attended and addressed the event. Zhuang Rongwen, Deputy Head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, Director of the Office of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission, and Minister of the Cyberspace Administration of China, Shi Xiaolin, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee and Governor of the People's Government of Sichuan Province, and Tian Xiangli, Chairperson of the CPPCC Sichuan Provincial Committee, were among the attendees.
After the opening ceremony of the conference, a main forum was convened. In this session, Zhuang Rongwen, along with Li Yi, Secretary of the Leading Party Members Group and Vice Chairman of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Hu Kaihong, the full-time Deputy Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Guiding Cultural and Ethical Progress, and Wang Fengchao, Mayor of Chengdu Municipal People's Government, delivered thematic speeches. Zhang Donggang, Secretary of the CPC Committee of Renmin University of China, representing experts and scholars; Chu Xuejun, Party Secretary and Chairman of Xinhuanet, representing key central news websites; Eddie Yongming Wu, Chief Executive Officer of Alibaba Group, representing internet companies; Zhu Tiexiong, a winner of the sixth "China Youth Good Netizen" outstanding story award, representing positive energy online influencers; and Sun Weiyi, a doctoral student in archaeology at Sichuan University, representing young students, made exchange speeches.
Delegates to the conference believe that advancing cyberspace civility is vital for adapting to the new trends of rapidly developing information technology. It is also an essential part of building a strong socialist culture and a strong cyber country. With an emphasis on building a modernization of material and cultural-ethical advancement, the third plenary session of the 20th CPC Central Committee proposed the significant task of deepening reform in the cultural sector, providing us with fundamental guidance to advance cultural reform and development, as well as enhance cyberspace civility at the new starting point.
Delegates to the conference highlighted the need to follow the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Culture and General Secretary Xi's important thoughts on boosting China's strength in cyberspace, fully implement the guiding principles from the 20th CPC National Congress and the third and second plenary sessions of the 20th Central Committee, take solid measures to advance various aspects regarding cyber civility building in the new era, further promote the mainstream values and spread positive energy in cyberspace, so as to rally a tremendous force dedicated to building a great country and moving toward national rejuvenation. It is crucial to maintain a firm grip on the right direction for building civility in cyberspace, continuously cultivate a positive and healthy online culture, channel efforts to enhance the effectiveness of cyberspace governance, refine the working mechanisms for fostering cyberspace civility, and strive to continuously achieve new advancements in the realm of cyberspace civility in the new era.
The conference released the 2024 Outstanding Cases of Internet Civilization Construction and the Initiative for Internet Civilization in Family Traditions. It also displayed some projects selected from the 2024 Internet Public Welfare Action.
The conference is jointly held by the Office of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission, the Office of the Central Commission for Guiding Cultural and Ethical Progress, the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee, and the People's Government of Sichuan Province. The event was attended by leading officials from the member units of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission and the member units under the central special working mechanism for guiding cultural and ethical progress, relevant leaders from Sichuan Province, persons in charge from central key news websites, leading officials from the offices of the cyberspace affairs commissions and the offices of the commissions for guiding cultural and ethical progress in various provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities directly under the central government), heads of internet social organizations and internet companies, experts and scholars, and positive energy online influencers, among others. |
